What's been happening with us lately?

merch back

Wow, where has the year gone? It’s been a very busy few months for us here at WPM and Xmas is now just around the corner!  We have a lot of exciting news to report this month.  We’ve been working on an array of interesting projects including custom socks, rugby balls, cyclone kits, the Kosmic Sound Xmas Catalogue and helping with some new promotional merchandise items for Scitech’s Rescue Exhibit to launch this month.

As most of you know we were also fortunate enough to secure a government print tender with Department Of Corrective Services as well as welcome some new clients.

Along with our work we have been busy training and fundraising for the annual Santos Great Bike Ride that kicks off next weekend.  We have 26 riders this year, one of our biggest teams in 4 years and we have already cracked our fund raising target of $1000!

We were also lucky enough to be the print sponsor for the Lung Institute of WA’s Melbourne Cup Luncheon for Cystic Fibrosis. A fantastic event that we hope will stay on our calendar for coming years.  A lunch for 220 people together with an array of raffles, games and auctions saw approximately $45,000 raised to go towards Cystic Fibrosis research.  Fantastic effort!

To finish off the year we are looking forward to a busy 5 weeks until the 22ndDecember when we clock off for Christmas. We will have a short break to recharge before returning on 3rd January ready for a bigger and better 2012.

Job of the month

The deliberations are over and it is with great pleasure that we announce this month’s job of the month to Foster Wheeler’s Cyclone Survival Kits. Some may have found the concept logistically daunting however we immediately saw it as an exciting challenge.

The idea of the “Cyclone Survival Kit” is to raise awareness of the procedures when in a cyclone prone area, educate fly in fly out workers and provide them with an easily portable emergency kit which can be quickly located.

To start off the process Foster Wheeler supplied a link to a 3 in 1 torch which they had found on an online retail website. They supplied us with a brief including the aims of the project, the budget and quantity of kits required.  WPM quoted several options for similar (but better) products and provided samples of the favourites.

Once the torch had been confirmed, the fun could begin. 1000 kits were to be produced and housed in a suitable container. WPM sourced 20L buckets with tamper proof lids, 1.5L bottled water, printed booklets and stickers and packaged it all together with the 12-in-1 torch. 16 pallets of the kits were then secured and ready for delivery to the Dampier site. The feedback for the kits has been overwhelming and Foster Wheeler was thrilled with the final result.

Santos Great Bike Ride

WPM is again participating in the Santos Great Bike Ride for our fourth consecutive year! The event is taking place Sunday 20th November with 3 options of a 10km ride, 53km ride or a 106km ride around our gorgeous river.

The Blue, Red & White jerseys will be out in force with 26 of us riding in our very stylish WPM riding gear. Neil has got the gig of team captain again this year and says he’s looking forward to watching everyone have fun and telling their stories about their ride.

The Bike Ride is a favourite event on our calendar. It’s a great social occasion that doubles as a team building exercise as well as a building our brand awareness. Let’s not forget about the fundraising! The team have been working hard hustling friends and family to raise $1200 in donations and still going.

To finish off we’ll leave you with some words of wisdom from our Captain:
“The longer you ride the longer you live!!

Product Feature

This month’s product feature is great for golf days and a very cool idea for corporate gifting or giveaways at tradeshows. It is with this in mind that we would like to introduce the “Jacket Ball”. Jacket ball is clip-on oversized golf ball that transforms into a rain jacket. The jacket is a rain/wind resistant polyester jacket and you can brand the outside of your ball with your company logo that stays on display. Sizes available are M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL. Minimum orders start at 50 units.

All the best,

The WPM team

This month we bring you a bumper issue of the WPM News to tell you about all the things that have been happening with us over the past couple of months. Jess attended the Australian Promotional Expo’s Workwear and Apparel tradeshow, we sent Neil over to Sydney for Print Ex 11, the largest print expo in Australia, we discovered that sometimes rock can beat paper and we celebrated our 11th birthday just to name a few!

Print Ex is a massive event spanning 3 halls of the Sydney Convention Centre. Occurring once every 4 years it was a “must see” event on the calendar. For Neil it was a fantastic opportunity to check out the latest print technologies, talk to the manufacturers about the core strengths of the machines and find out which printers are housing them and in particular which ones are in WA. According to Neil “It really became obvious that you can print on anything!”

Among the innovations that stood out for Neil was a new paper stock made entirely from rock. Stone paper as it’s called is an offset stock that is earth friendly, energy efficient and acid free. It prints and finishes like traditional wood pulp fiber papers with the versatility and durability of synthetic papers. To top it off it has the ability to be recycled into paper and plastic which Neil thought was “Fantastic!”

Another stand out was a Micro Billboard finishing machine that combines digital print with database software to create high impact, full-colour, variable image, direct mail pieces called the micro-billboard. Neil cites an example of its effectiveness with a direct mail campaign for a car distributorship that had an increase in response rate from 5% to 70%. The campaign was so effective that they had to cancel the next run!

Other highlights included laminating machines that can run out 6000 A2 sheets an hour, keyless presses that are up and running in 2 mins, presses with inline foiling units, large format machines that print onto tiles and even laptops and so much more.

All in all, the 3 day trip to Sydney was a worthwhile exercise that meant that WPM can give local clients the benefit of the very latest technology in Australia.

As promised, lots of exciting things have been happening this month, starting of course with the look of our brand new website! As you will see we decided to revamp the site with a fresh and exciting facelift. The past few years have been a time of growth for us and we believe that the site now reflects the WPM that we have grown to become. We’ve added some new elements, shortcut buttons, colour and incorporated our merchandising branding in the form of some flash animation! Please feel free to look through and tell us what you think.

Along with the website we welcome new staff members, new clients, expanded our suppliers and have been out on our bikes riding again for another great cause.

The first of the tradeshows kicks off today as we attend the Perth leg of the APPA Roadshow and next week will see Jess off to Sydney for the largest apparel and workwear tradeshow. Stay tuned over the next few weeks for an update with all of our new discoveries.

Job of the month

When deciding job of the month, we look for jobs that we have helped to produce or source that are a little different and have a good story. So with that in mind, this month’s shout out for job of the month goes out to RPS for their pitch fix tools. The brief was simple, they were in search of a quality promotional tool for golf days that had to be retractable and include a ball marker.

Every player needs to carry a pitch repairer on the golf course. A pitch repairer, or divot tool, is used for repairing ball marks, also known as pitch marks – the small depressions left by golf balls landing on the putting green so we began our hunt to find some examples that might be suitable.

After viewing some options, RPS showed us a sample of a golf tool that was currently being produced for their UK office so Jackie was on the case to track down the supplier to make it happen. She was able to match this product and better price! Another job well done.

Freeway Bike Hike

Well done to everyone who joined us again for the HBF Freeway Bike Hike to support the Asthma Foundation. As you all know by now, here at WPM we love to work up a sweat to help out a good cause so it’s for this reason that we couldn’t resist this opportunity.

Amongst our sporting prowess we had 6 entrants in the 60km ride and 4 entrants in the 30km ride. Although final results are yet to be released we had our team captain Neil record a time of 1 hour 40mins for the 60kms. Top effort Captain!

The ride finished up in the City of Joondalup with an array of fun awaiting us at the other side. Food, music and a sense of achievement in the air made for a fun day.

To cap it all off, we were able to raise over $700 with donations and registrations for the event to go towards education and support services for asthma sufferers, their parents and carers as well as further research into finding a cure.

New Client

As well as a new valued addition to our staff base we also welcome our newest client DORIC who have just recently completed the WPM discovery process and signed up with us for a full print management program. You may have seen their signage around commercial construction sites around Perth however DORIC are recognised as one of the premier construction companies in Australia, DORIC regularly undertakes major projects with budgets in excess of AU$100 million and we look forward to providing them with a system that will help them manage and keep track of everything print associated with maintaining these projects.

Welcome back

WPM would like to welcome you all back and trust you had a wonderful Christmas break. If we haven’t done so as yet we look forward to catching up with you all very soon. Our calendar is already filling up with tradeshows and events to inspire us with the latest in printing technologies, merchandise & apparel so we are going to have plenty to talk about!

March is going to be an exciting month with the APPA road show coming to visit us in Perth and soon after that we will be jumping on a plane to Sydney for the Uniform and Work Wear expo.

May will see us attending Print Ex 2011, a leading trade-only event for the Australian printing and graphic communications industries also held in Sydney.

In September we’ll be travelling to Melbourne for the PrintCom Expo 2011. The 2011 PrintCom Expo is run by the Graphic Arts Services Association of Australia and promises to bring the very best and most recent innovations in print and communications technology and solutions.

Please keep us updated with any events that you may have coming up so we can keep an eye out for ideas!

All the best for 2011,

The WPM team

Variable Image Personalisation

Most of you will have heard of the term variable data printing. This allows you to merge a database of names into your printed material to completely personalise your print to its intended recipient. Adding this touch to your communication can make a long lasting impression. However, what we would like to share is that this technology has now been further developed with its newest flavor, Variable Image Personalisation. This gives the added ability of dynamically adding conditional text to a background or image, resulting in real ‘Wow’ factor for the receiver!

So what does this all mean? Hopefully all of you will have received your WPM calendar this Christmas and noticed that each of the 12 pages had your name set up in different ways. The first page kicking off with your name up in lights or fireworks as it were to start off the New Year! These images were created by utilising this process.

Our designers in Melbourne gave us a hand to put it all together in what was a relatively straight forward process. The images were selected and combined with our database to create the effect.

The feedback that we have received so far indicates that they have been a resounding success and you all seemed to love them! It was wonderful to hear back from clients who found them “Uplifting” or those of you with uncommon names who have never had a personalised key ring or mug!

It’s this kind of response that has prompted us to open up next year’s calendar run to you all so that you can gain the same response from your clients. We’ll make it simple and select the images so that all you would need to do is send us your list of names and your logo and we’ll do the rest!

To express your interest in creating your own 2012 calendars, please email Jackie jackie@westpm.com.au or Jess jessica@westpm.com.au

Job of the month

The vote is in and December’s job of the month goes to the Association of Perth Attractions brochure coordinated by Scitech. The APA brochure is a 16pp DL booklet that displays various locations that tourists to WA may like to visit. It includes attractions such as Scitech, Perth Zoo, The Perth Mint, Fremantle Prison, Western Australian Maritime Museum and Caversham Wildlife Park just to name a few.

This year we worked with the team to condense the size to a smaller publication with less pages. Our designers helped to modify the layout so that each attraction could still have an equal amount of space. New features include a colour coded contents page and a directions page containing simple directions to get each site.

Our team was able to ensure that the job was printed and delivered in the week between Christmas and New Year when most printers are normally closed! Another quality print job delivered on time.

Job of the month

This month’s job of the month goes to Kosmic Sound for their 2010 Summer Catalogue. With a fresh new look and a new logo to promote, what better way to launch it than with 350,000 printed copies distributed to mailboxes across Perth.

We quoted various paginations, sizes etc in order to achieve the best product and work within the budget resulting in a 20pp full colour catalogue on a nice light weight stock. The catalogues were produced using an Eastern States Print supplier in a week from signoff, delivered ahead of schedule so that they could be distributed in advance from the store, we then managed the main mailbox distribution.

It was also the perfect opportunity to introduce the new ‘Kosmic Players Card’ for loyal Kosmic customers. 2000 plastic cards were printed four colour process and each with their own unique barcode for storing details. The loyalty card programme has been an instant hit and more cards are being printed now in order to meet unprecedented demand! To find out how you can get your own Kosmic Players card, visit the team in store or check out their Facebook page

Santos Great Bike Ride

A big thank you to everyone who joined the West Print Management team for this year’s Great Bike Ride. The bad weather stayed away for most of the event which allowed the day to be a great success and enjoyable for everyone involved. An extra special thank you to the team members who joined us from Scitech, Midwest GP Network, Prosafe and ‘The Geraldton Crew’. Amongst the team we had a few high flyers that deserve a mention.

WPM winners for each category were as follows:
106km ride: David Rakuscek from Geraldton with a time of 2hrs 59mins 9seconds
53km ride: Zach Clark with a time of 1hr 40mins 29seconds
10km ride: Charlotte Diaz with a time of 28mins 43seconds

Our leader Neil managed 53kms in 1hr 42:45 which he was pleased about as it was a reduction of over 15 minutes from his last effort,

Well done to you all and to everyone that participated. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again as well as any new budding cyclists in the team for 2011!

Coca Cola Recall

With so many promotional product companies around and online offering cheap prices, it is important to know that you are dealing with quality suppliers who are working with verified factories to ensure that products that are being produced are safe and up to standard.

The article below outlines how Coca Cola produced some promotional drinking glasses depicting comic book and movie characters such as Superman, Wonder Woman and the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz that when tested actually exceeded US federal limits for lead in children's products by up to 1000 times. A total of 88,000 glasses had to be recalled with enamel on the glass containing up to 30% lead, where the federal limit is only 0.03 per cent.

What are QR codes?

Quick Response or QR codes are an exciting new marketing tool that we couldn’t wait to tell you about. In short they are a type of barcode, readable by your iPhone and other smart phones that give you further information about a product, service or company within seconds. QR codes are already starting to be seen more and more on flyers, newspapers, billboards and even t-shirts in countries such as Japan, US, Canada and the UK.

So what does this all mean and how do they work? Have a look at the video link below to see QR codes in action and how they could benefit your business marketing.
